Mr Abdulhamid:

Good luck with the transition to US culture. I don't expect your yearnings for peace in Syria to die down... even I can't explain them and I have spent less than 4 months of my entire life in the country.

If you are ever in San Francisco, I would like to meet you.

What are you talking about? Giant and Safeway are not cheap grocery stores and are definitely no Shoppers or Food Lion so don't worry about your aristocratic reputation when shopping there. Target is no Bloomingdales or Macy's but at least it's not Walmart.

See, it's not that bad! :)

Good luck!

bonne chançe
j esper que vous allez trouvez la paix

Welcome to the U.S. I've been to Silver Springs--not a bad place.
Having moved around altogether too much in my young years, I can commiserate with your missing home.

I am not sure whether to congratulate you on your "exile" out of Syria, or tell you I am sorry your time there was not what you had hoped it would be. I suppose I would like to express both. Altogether, I am glad you are back in Dc, and I have to admit, I envy you! I miss DC.

I wish you and your family the best and I hope your relocation is a smooth one.

P.S. it was only after reading the part where you mention who your mom is that I realized I met you and your mom once outside the Sheraton in Damascus many years ago actually. I was with my grandmother and since I never actually lived in Syria and rarely watched arabic television, I am ashamed to say I did not know who your mother was when my grandmother started talking to her...In any case, I imagine I am not the first person to tell you I met you with your mom!

I hope the adjustment for your family is as smooth as possible. And best wishes to Ola on the transition; I'm near her age and I'd imagine it would be hard.

All the best...
