Guantanamo is a disgrace. No one can deny that, and the recent ruling to the effect that the Bush administration had violated both American military law and the Geneva Convention in ordering the military tribunals comes as an official endorsement of point of view. Indeed, and due to the fact that such a glaring abuse of human rights is being perpetrated by the very administration that is supposed to champion the cause of democracy and human rights around the world should naturally be noted and condemned by people from around the world.
However, people from the Middle East in particular should think twice before dwelling too much on this point, the prison systems operated by their own government are far worse and date way back in time. Moreover, their silence in this regard, while understandable, is one of the main reasons why their dictatorial regimes continue to rule even after so many decades of misrule, oppression and corruption, and why American and international troops are now back in their midst.
Oppression breeds ignorance, and the admixture of the two attracts more overt foreign dabbling and intervention. The battle against abuse, even one perpetrated by far away countries, begins within. Fighting against the internal enemy should be the first priority for the reformers of the region. For once we shut down our own prisons, there will be no more Guantanamos.
Not only is Guantanamo a shame--but the fact that Assad & his diplomats in the United States brag about cooperation with the US in the war on terror (eg, deporting Syrians from America to Syrian torture chambers) when they speak to public audiences, while condemning Guantanamo to their own people, is even more shameful!

Good point indeed, Yaman.

Only the tribunals were struck down.
Detention was endorsed - specifically.
In addition the Supreme Court Stated that if Congress passed a proper law tribunals could proceed.
I suppose you have to hold on to what ever small victories you can imagine.
I'm reminded of what Rundstedt said after the Normandy invasion "Make peace you fools."
I might add that there is nothing to be gained from further war except death and destruction of Islamic civilization.
Think of the cold war only more so. The end is not in doubt. Only the date of the collapse.
As an American I'd rather be a friend than an enemy. Wipe the slate clean and start fresh. We did it with Germany and Japan only after a destructive war. Certainly you folks are smarter than the Germans and Japanese. Aren't you?
American allies grow rich.
You claim the difference is wealth. War is a destroyer of wealth. Give it up.
A culture built on grievance will spend a lot of time grieving.
